Why Abstract?

Mechanisms 2024 acrylic on canvas 24” x 24”

While my original linoleum block prints and monoprints usually depict a specific subject, my paintings are generally abstract. I approach them a little bit differently. I love exploring different techniques and experimenting with materials. Abstract painting has an inherent freedom, so it has always felt like a good fit for me.

My abstract art doesn’t focus on recognizable scenes or objects. Instead, I try to use things like colors, shapes, and textures to create a composition that might help me connect with the viewer and invite them to interpret the painting in their own way based on their own experiences.

At one of my recent gallery shows, I provided a guest book for comments and feedback from visitors. Here are some of their comments that perfectly illustrate my thoughts about abstract paintings:

“Love the colors and the shapes. I saw so much in each piece”.

“I like the titles as well as the art”.

“I love the greens and yellows in your paintings”.

“I really like your use of white space”.

“Love the use of color and recurring motifs in all the paintings”.

“The composition feels at once highly deliberate yet effortless. There is a comfort in the arrangement of shapes and colors”.

“I love how you articulate mood through color without needing detailed symbols”.

“The art reminded me of summer and home”.

“I see urban forms, cityscapes, the vivid chaos of crowded cities”.

Isn’t that great?! Thanks to everyone who made time to stop by and see the show.
